Need Doors info to move to new server

Hi all.
I just inherited this application and we need to move it off of a solaris machine and put it on another solaris machine.

I have never used doors before and was wondering if anyone had any documentation available that might assist me.

We have Doors Version 7

Thanks.

You inherited a DOORS server and as an admin your first task is move the data and you don't know how to do it??

It's not hard, but seriously, pony up some $$$ for someone who knows what it is they are doing. I would NEVER want anyone messing with moving data in an application they weren't familiar with. Seriously, so much can go wrong.

Get some training in the meantime, but in the short-term, hire someone to do this. Coincidentally, my company could do it for you. Contact me for details.

As I said I just inherited the app and yes I don't know how to do it. Before yesterday I had never heard of it before and am really just looking for some administrative documentation. I have the installation and application manuals but they don't really explain the 'behind-the-scenes' workings of the database or the app. (IE:) what happens on the Unix side.

I'll continue to search for more documentation before I spend money on hiring a consultant.

Thanks anyway.

Don't know anything about non-Windows computers.

Try this. Lets keep the production server running while you practice.

Install the DOORS server (and client??) on the new Machine. Start and initialize an empty database. Create a new DOORS icon on some client machine, re-directing the data to the new machine in the target field; may look like this:

"c:\Progam Files\IBM\Rational\DOORS\9.2\bin\doors.exe" -d 19353@MyNewSolarisServer

Verify this client can access the new database using this icon.

Now lets practice moving the data. Turn off the test service and delete the target file hierarchy. Turn off the production DOORS service and copy the file hierarchy. Turn back on the production service and let work proceed. Install the hierarchy on the test server. Start the test service. Verify the server, and the above client can indeed access the 'test' database, which will look exactly like the production one with the same users and passwords. Might as well use the database properties to rename the database to make sure nobody gets confused.

If you cannot make that work, then consider hiring some honestly Unscrupulous contractor. lol

You also want to confirm the following on your new server:
  • Licenses are present (you might need to get additional temporary licenses for the transition period)
  • New server specs exceed the minimum standard: processor speed, memory, disk space to allow for growth, etc.
  • Set DOORS system parameters the same as your old server
(They would be in the registry on a Windows machine; I'm not sure where they would be on a UNIX box)

Cheers,
Ken.

The OP is on DOORS 7 so there is a Unix client for that version. The OP mentioned moving, not upgrading. Does the OP have the original install binaries for Solaris for DOORS 7?

Like Louie said, the actual installation and everything isn't that complicated, but when you hit a snag, will you know it?

I wasn't trying to sell the OP consulting; all I was saying is that this is not something that a newbie to DOORS should be doing at all. Certainly not as a first task. Just a recipe ripe for failure.
